"I was thirteen and it was my first real emotional experience. The next day I was twenty-nine. Being devoted to the Dolls ruined my education. I was thrown off the track and football teams at school for turning up to games in desperately self-designed Dolls t-shirts. The teachers were very worried, and expected me to turn up for Maths in drag.

The Dolls gave me a sense of uniqueness, as if they were my own personal discovery. Back in '73 the Dolls were total outcasts, and no-one with any sense even mentioned their name. As it was, I became the only visible proof that someone actually listened to them."
